Start Date: 23 July 2005
Finish Date: 2 October 2005
Time: Tuesday-Saturday 10.30am-5 pm, Sundays 2-5pm
Details: This exhibition will look at the dozens of different images of Wallace created in the centuries since his death. Wallace has been given many faces in 700 years, each of them different. The Stirling Smith has built up a special collection of the iconic images of Wallace, signifying different episodes in Scottish history.

A recent acquisition is the portrait of Wallace dating to 1661, from Niddrie Marschall House, which is set within a 1720s trophy of arms. The image was engraved and widely used in the 19th century. Thanks to a fund raising campaign headed by the Provost of the City of Stirling, 208 organisations, companies and individuals made donations to secure the portrait for the Stirling Smith. This will be the centrepiece of the exhibition.

The exhibition will also look at other heroes who were considered to be like William Wallace " Garibaldi, ‘the Wallace of Italy', Kossuth ‘the Wallace of Hungary', Simon Bolivar, creator of Bolivia, Nat Turner, leader of the first black revolt in the USA, Toussant L'Overture who led the uprising of the black slaves in Haiti, Ghandi, Ho Chi Min and Nelson Mandela.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an events programme throughout its duration to enable people to share information and contemplate the significance of Wallace. The programme will cover the Wallace story at length and each event is highlighted in the Events Calendar.
